Wow. I’m only two levels in and just wow. It’s like being bombarded by fun from every direction. It’s like they describe the Nexus in Star Trek: Generations, as if joy was something tangible you could wrap around yourself. In every facet it’s at the top form of what video games can be. The visuals are stunning, beautiful, up with the finest points of Ocarina of Time 3DS and often beyond. The creatures and the journey into the underworld outdo Wrath of the Titans by leaps and bounds. The story is communicated brilliantly, there’s rarely a second of gameplay without funny banter, useful hints or substantial plot.
And that gameplay- Amazing. The controls are a little odd at first but I had them down by the end of the first level. Thumb hurts a little because I didn’t use the included stand, but that’s a minor minor problem. To think I held off buying the game because of it almost makes me blush, it’s so easy to fully immerse yourself in the game. The flight sequences are pure old fashioned arcade fun, blasting away at monsters with all manner of strange and creative weapons. The beasts give such a rewarding pop when you defeat them. Whatever makes shoot-em-up games fun, this one nailed it. The ground play is also very compelling and highlights some truly brilliant level design. The heart system is a perfect way to add difficulty naturally, letting each level play as easy as pie or hard as Hades. The simple, short first level becomes fatal when a giant invincible tank rolls out into the field.
The features are seemingly endless. The core game is phenomenal but around it are puzzles and egg tosses and weapons labs and shops and I haven’t even touched the AR cards or multi-player features. I’ve even had to go to youtube to watch the levels I’ve played so I can enjoy the dialog and story without being distracted by playing it.
One of the most fun things I’ve ever played on any system. Hail Nintendo!!!
